Even in ‘Jaded City,’ Heads Turn to Glimpse a Duke and Duchess

On the last of their three days here, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridgeentered the landmark appreciation leg of the journey. They spent much of the morning at the National September 11 Memorial and its museum, attended a dinner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and, in between, the duke stole away for a stop at the Empire State Building with Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Despite their tourist status, Prince William and Catherine, the former Kate Middleton, were afforded uncommon respect from some residents. Crowds continued to track their every twitch. Audible profanity was minimal along the corridors where their impending arrivals jeopardized traffic. Workers assembled at windows across 34th Street to absorb the elegant choreography of the royal motorcade.

“You need to understand that we are not the most innocent city,” Mr. de Blasio told his guest at the Empire State Building. “We are known as a somewhat jaded city.”
