Kyrgyz official warns UN Assembly of international dangers from unstable Afghanistan --- 29 September 2014 – Afghanistan poses the most serious external challenge to Central Asia, Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Erlan Abdyldaev told the United Nations General Assembly, calling for a more proactive international contribution to strengthen regional law enforcement and to promote regional cooperation. -- “The illegal drug trafficking appears as one of the key problems of the entire region as a direct consequence of the situation in Afghanistan,” the Foreign Minister said, today noting also the threats of terrorism and extremism emanating from the country. -- These strong links undermine the achievements of Afghanistan’s security and its ability to ensure law and order in the country, he added, noting that the country today inaugurated Ashraf Ghani as its new President with Abdullah Abdullah as Chief Executive Officer. -- Addressing the theme of this year’s 69th high-level debate, which this year focuses on the preparation and implementation of a transformative development agenda, Mr. Abdyldaev spoke about the challenges to ending poverty in Kyrgyzstan.
