Ronald Shurer: Medal of Honor awarded to Secret Service agent

A cancer-stricken former soldier who battled to the top of an Afghan mountain treating wounded troops has won the highest US military award.

Ronald Shurer, 39, was the only medic on the 6 April 2008 mission to capture a militant leader in the Shok Valley when his team was ambushed.

The former Green Beret was initially awarded the Silver Star, but comrades said he deserved the top award.

US President Donald Trump presented him with the Medal of Honor on Monday.

The former staff sergeant left the military in 2011 to join the US Secret Service.

Citing his "conspicuous gallantry", Mr Trump said many more soldiers would have died that day if not for his heroic actions.

"I wish I was that popular," the president added, following audience applause for the former medic. - More, BBCNews
