U.S. Ambassador Hosts Humanitarian Photo Exhibit; Announces Assistance

As part of his remarks, Ambassador Bass announced that the United States is providing an additional nearly $37 million to meet the needs of people affected by the ongoing conflict, recent returnees from Pakistan, vulnerable Afghans who have been impacted by the many natural disasters that strike the country and refugees remaining in countries of asylum in the region.  This brings the total U.S. contribution to the Afghan humanitarian response to nearly $276 million since FY 2017.

This contribution goes to our international organization partners on the ground—including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the World Food Programme (WFP)—to support life-saving humanitarian assistance.  Some programs support refugee repatriation grants, education, livelihoods training, civil documents and other efforts to promote the long-term integration of returning refugees and their host communities.  U.S. humanitarian assistance also  provides emergency food aid, nutrition assistance, clean drinking water, safe spaces for children and parents, transitional shelters, and essential supplies such as blankets and kitchen sets.   Latrines, hygiene kits, and support for education campaigns to promote healthy hygiene habits help prevent the spread of disease.  The United States also supports humanitarian coordination and disaster preparedness to minimize the impact when disasters occur.

The United States urges all countries to contribute the remaining funds required to fulfill the UN humanitarian appeals for Afghanistan.  The international community’s assistance is still needed to support the large number of vulnerable people in Afghanistan. - More, usembassy
