Deputy Secretary John J. Sullivan Visits Afghanistan - af.usembassy.gov

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan held meetings in Kabul on January 30 to reaffirm the United States’ strong support for Afghanistan at this difficult time, and discuss joint efforts to achieve the objectives of the U.S. South Asia strategy and set the conditions for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict.  The Deputy Secretary’s visit underscores the United States’ commitment to working with the government and the Afghan people to bring peace, security, and sustained economic growth to Afghanistan and the region.

During his visit, the Deputy Secretary met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, and other government leaders to discuss security cooperation; the importance of holding timely, credible, and inclusive parliamentary and presidential elections; and continued reforms designed to build a peaceful, secure, and prosperous future for the Afghan people.

The Deputy Secretary also engaged with young leaders of civil society, members of the media, and business leaders; with humanitarian organizations based in Afghanistan; with individuals from across the political spectrum; and with leaders of efforts to build foundations for peace.  In addition, he met with dedicated U.S. government employees at our Embassy and with U.S. troops serving courageously in Afghanistan alongside the brave Afghan forces to thank them for their hard work in implementing the South Asia strategy. - Read More
