Aung San Suu Kyi's party wins a historic majority in Myanmar parliament

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party has won enough seats to hold an absolute majority in parliament, a major milestone in the country’s transition from more than five decades of military rule.

Election results released Friday morning showed Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy had won 348 parliamentary seats, more than the 329 required to control both houses of the legislature, with about 20% of seats still to be determined.

The results continued a sweeping victory for the party in Sunday’s elections, the freest in the Southeast Asian nation, formerly known as Burma, since the army took power in 1962. The NLD has won more than 80% of the seats contested, enough to overcome the one-quarter of parliamentary seats that are reserved for the military.

Myanmar’s military has pledged to respect the results of the election.

The constitution allows parliament to select the country’s president, giving the NLD, which under Suu Kyi has led the fight for democratic reforms, significant powers in a government that remains heavily controlled by the military. - Read More at latimes
