155 dead, hundreds wounded as quake, aftershocks jolt Pakistan
KABUL (Pajhwok): A strong earthquake measuring magnitude 7.7 on the open-ended Richter scale struck Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Monday, causing hundreds of casualties.
Initial reports indicate the tremors, lasting more than a minute, were felt in Kabul, Faizabad, Jalalabad and other major cities of the quake-prone country.
Panicked residents of Kabul rushed out of homes as a result of the quake, which was 196 km deep and centred 82 km southeast of Faizabad in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
In neighbouring Pakistan, the quake jolted Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Multan, Chitral, Mardan Rawalpindi, Quetta, Kohat, Malakand, Dir and other cities.
Eighteen people were killed in Peshawar, where several residential and commercial buildings were razed to the ground, according to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani.
The epicentre of the earthquake was in Badakhshan province, approximately 265km northeast of Kabul. The extent of damage was not immediately known. - Read More at pajhwok
