AFGHANISTAN WILL NOT BE DIVIDED - by Killid

In July, two former US ambassadors, Peter Galbraith and Robert D. Blackwill, argued separately for the break-up of the country as the best possible solution for the US in Afghanistan.

Both views have kicked up a storm in the Afghan media. Commentators have pointed out that neither the Afghan government nor diplomatic missions in Kabul had reacted immediately in outrage to dismiss the threat of partition. -- The political silence here and abroad was not in the national interest of Afghanistan. -- When the government did react, it was to say the comment were"irresponsible".

Afghanistan can no longer neglect or leave others to take decisions about its sovereignty. The partition of the country has never been a question in the minds of Afghans, even though they have suffered through years of civil war and tumult.

Undoubtedly Western officials are aware that it is the Afghans who have the right to make decisions about their future. -- Neither Galbraith nor Blackwill have assumed that a partitioned Afghanistan will be trouble free. There is certainly no guarantee that other parts of the country will remain safe if southern Afghanistan is handed over to the armed opposition.

Afghans should pay close attention when the Westerners say: "We're in Afghanistan to protect Washington and London". -- It means that they are concerned that an insurgent group in Afghanistan can threaten the West. -- Hence, what guarantee is there of peace if extremists are allowed to remain in the south of the country.

Afghans expect the Karzai government to defend the country's autonomy and not let the foreign forces here decide the political future of the country. ...More - Afghanistan Will Not be Divided
