Government may speed up withdrawal of UK troops - Times

Three ministers flew into Afghanistan today as the new government signalled it may speed up the withdrawal of British troops.

Foreign Secretary William Hague, Defence Secretary Liam Fox and International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell landed in Kabul in the early hours for talks with Afghan president Hamid Karzai, military chiefs and senior politicians.

In an interview with the Times published today, Fox said that Britain was not a “global policeman” and emphasised that the mission in Afghanistan, was about making British streets safer rather than mending the education system of a “broken 13th Century country”.

He said he wanted to “reset expectations and timelines” and plans to use the trip to explore ways to accelerate the departure of some 10,000 British troops. - Government may speed up withdrawal of UK troops
