In war-ravaged Afghanistan, even bombs don’t keep families away.

Desperation rules in Kabul, where an estimated 5 million people live with an infrastructure designed to accommodate 500,000. Even bombed-out buildings become lodging in such severe circumstances.

Kabul’s population has tripled since late 2001, making it perhaps the world’s fastest-growing city in the last eight years, according to Humanitarian Exchange Magazine. With ongoing war, the city has become a case study of urban displacement.
