Mr Karzai has said that the allegations of widespread fraud by his officials in the August 20 poll were exaggerated and has complained that the inquiry into his votes is politically motivated.
Mr Karzai is understood to have rejected an initial demand from Dr Abdullah for up to 10 ministerial posts for his supporters, according to one official familiar with the negotiations.
Haroun Mir, director of Afghanistan's Centre for Research and Policy Studies, said Dr Abdullah could join a unity government in a powerful, specially created "chief executive officer" position.
