Treasury Dept. Plan Would Let Government Buy Stakes in Banks

The Bush administration is nearing completion of a plan that would allow the government to inject cash into banks in exchange for ownership stakes in a bid to shore up the ailing financial system, according to officials and sources who have been in direct contact with the Treasury.
